17 injured, several critically, in two-alarm fire at Stag Hotel in Watsonville

WATSONVILLE – Seventeen people were injured, five critically, in a two-alarm blaze Monday at the Stag Hotel downtown, authorities said.
At least one man jumped from a second-floor window as flames tore through the 85-year-old two-story residential hotel at 117 W. Beach St. about 5:45 p.m. Thick smoke filled the street as dozens of onlookers watched firefighters from several agencies tackle the fire.
Ambulances and helicopters were called out for multiple casualties. Four of the injured were taken to Watsonville Community Hospital, four to Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz and three others were airlifted to out-of-county trauma centers, Watsonville Fire spokeswoman Rosa Meyer said.
Several other residents were being treated in the parking lot behind the hotel for what appeared to be smoke inhalation, though paramedics also were putting a splint on the leg of a man laying on the ground.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The extent of the damage is still to be determined.
“My initial thought was hopefully everybody got out safely,” said Ernest Araiza, who has owned the hotel for about nine years. “Buildings can be fixed or repaired. Lives are precious.”
A shoeless resident who gave his name as Barefoot Timmy said he heard the fire alarm go off and opened the door to a hallway filled with smoke. He retreated and climbed out his first-floor window.
Next door, at the Discount Mall, store owners worried the blaze might spread so they closed up shop and evacuated along with their customers. The mall’s janitor, Victor Mendoza, rushed over with two ladders to help second-story residents get out.
“I was walking down the hall and suddenly I heard, ‘Fire, fire, bring ladders,'” Mendoza said. “There were big flames coming out the front window. I just did what I could.”
Ben Puente was driving by, saw the fire and pulled over. He said he ran along the building yelling for people to get out, and saw one man jump from a second-story window and land on the ground. He helped others down the ladders.
Manager Russ Rickman said he had walked to the Subway shop two blocks away to pick up dinner and returned minutes later to see flames shooting from a window of a first-floor room at the front of the building.
“It happened so quickly,” he said.
Firefighters from the station a block away on Second Street responded quickly, Rickman said. Fire Chief Mark Bisbee said they immediately went to work rescuing residents and doused the flames in 8-10 minutes.
Rickman said the hotel has 50 rooms – three apartments in two buildings. He said about 45 men lived there. The fire was in the larger front building.
The building, constructed in 1927, had no sprinklers. The residents are a mix, some disabled, some struggling with substance abuse or in recovery, some on parole. All are men with little income.
Bisbee said the building was close to the top of his list of worries when he assumed leadership of the department in 2004. Though likely built to the standards of its time, it doesn’t meet codes required of current construction, he said.
“If there’s any silver lining, when it’s rebuilt, they’ll have to install sprinklers,” Bisbee said.
The Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross set up an emergency center around the corner at Marinovich Park on Second Street. Sondra Ziegler, coordinator of the Disaster Action Team, said residents were being fed soup and hot drinks and pizza was on the way about 8 p.m. She said the Red Cross would put the displaced in motel rooms, most likely for the next three days while living arrangements are sorted out.

Structure Fire and Serious Injury Liability

Fires and explosions are sudden and devastating, destroying homes and buildings, and causing physical injuries and death.  Burn injuries are painful and disfiguring, and require long recovery periods.  Smoke inhalation, and inhalation of toxic fumes and gases from flammable fabrics and furniture stuffed with polyurethane foam, cause added injury and increase the likelihood of death.

The Law Offices of Gary A Kessler regularly represent plaintiffs in cases of catastrophic injury and wrongful death in fires and explosions caused or exacerbated by unsafe premises, unsafe construction sites, and unsafe products.

Faulty electrical wiring and furnaces, gas leaks, malfunctioning or absent smoke detectors, inaccessible or inadequate escape routes, the pressence of flammable fabrics and furniture, and the presence of dried vegetation that can fuel wild and urban interface fires are all examples of sources of liability for property owners or product manufacturers.

Determining the cause of a fire or explosion requires extensive experience and thorough investigation involving engineering, electrical, and gas line experts as well as fire scene experts.  The Law Offices of Gary A Kessler has the experience and the resources to effectively prepare and litigate cases on behalf of plaintiffs and family members injured or killed in fires and explosions.

With over 20 years of experience, Gary A Kessler has earned the respect of our colleagues and the courts in California and nationwide for our personal injury work.  We have achieved a winning record on behalf of our clients, and we are proud of our successful cases that lead to safety improvements through strengthened laws and product recall.

At Least Three Yacht Racers Killed After Apparent Collision with Large Cargo Ship off California Coast [UPDATED]

A screenshot of the Aegean’s SPOT Messenger feed, last updated Saturday, Apr 28th at 1:36 a.m., right on North Coronado Island

UPDATE:  The Latitude 38 blog reports that other boats in the race reported have a close encounter with a large ship around the time and in the same vacinity.

Michael Lawler, a crewmember aboard the Newport Beach-based Choate 48Amante, reports having a close encounter with a freighter in the same vicinity and time as Aegean‘s tracker stopped working. “We were farther offshore, about 10-12 miles west of the Coronados,” says Lawler. “Around 1:30 a.m., I went on watch and saw a freighter bearing down on us at what was probably 20 knots. His range lights were lined up and I could see both red and green bow lights. I didn’t have time to get on the radio, so I grabbed my two million-candlepower spotlight and aimed it at the ship. That caught his attention and he took a hard left turn to take our stern. He passed about 1/4 mile behind us.” Lawler, who circumnavigated aboard his North Wind 47 Traveller, says the wind was light, the seas were a little lumpy, and visibility was good.

However, a recently discovered feed of the Aegean’s SPOT Messenger showing the satellite track of the vessel (above), last updated at approximately 1:36 a.m., with the vessel directly on top of North Coronado Island, suggesting the vessel may have broken up on the rocks of the island.

This chart shows the search area for the sailing vessel Aegean. U.S. Coast Guard graphic (click for high res)

Original: At least three sailors competing in a yacht race from Newport Beach, CA to Ensenada, Mexico have been killed and one still remains missing after an apparent collision with a large cargo ship.

Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA), host of the N2E annual regatta, said that the sailboatAegean, a Hunter 376 representing the Little Ships Fleet club, vanished from the race’s online tracking system at approximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday.  Hours later, vessels in the area of the Coronado Islands reported finding debris in the water, which prompted the launch of a Coast Guard search leading to the discovery of the wreckage, including the rear transom with the vessel’s name on it.

By mid afternoon, the bodies of three crewmembers and loads of badly beaten debris had been recovered.  The search for the fourth crewmember continued Sunday, but was called off Sunday afternoon by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but initial reports indicate that the incident appears to be the result of collision with a much larger ship that did not see or even likely know of the collision.

“It was real obvious it had been hit just because the debris was so small,” a searcher told the Pasadena Star-News. The yacht looked like it “had gone through a blender.”

On Monday, it was revealed that the sailbot did not issue a distress signal or mayday.

A crew list was not immediately available, nor was it first known how many other crew may have been on the boat, but could have been sailed by five or more persons, said NOSA in a statement

The race started off Newport Beach in mid-day Friday and many boats finished in Ensenada Saturday, with the last ones due in Sunday. Weather conditions were lighter than normal at the time and place of the incident, with boats reporting winds of only 1 or 2 knots.

The incident marks the first fatalities in the 65-year history of the race, which saw 213 boats enter this year.

Man killed in I-5 crash near Coalinga is identified

A man killed Sunday in a crash on Interstate 5 just south of Jayne Avenue near Coalinga was identified today by the Fresno County Coroner as Scott Thudium, 52 of San Pablo.

The California Highway Patrol said that Thudium was in a Mitsubishi Montero driven by Cynthia Dayro, 48, of San Pablo when Dayro tried to set the SUV’s cruise control and drifted off the roadway. Dayro lost control and the car rolled several times.

Thudium was thrown from the car and died at the scene. Dayro suffered minor injuries. Isabell Thudium, 5, suffered moderate injuries.

Cause of the Fresno County Crash

As a passenger, the deceased likely could have done nothing to prevent this fatal  collision that ultimately took his life. The California Highway Patrol  will surely look at the speed of the vehicle, witness reports, and other factors to determine what occurred. Collisions such as this one can have countless causes, including unsafe passing maneuvers, swerving to avoid an object in the road, falling asleep at the wheel, driving under the influence, or driver distraction.

Seguin students injured after school bus crash with big rig, PT Cruiser

SEGUIN — Bits of burnt homework could be seen from the open emergency door, left ajar after a freshman football player helped fellow students off his burning school bus.

“At this time, we have zero fatalities. We are very blessed when it comes to that,” said State Trooper Jason Reyes.

Bus #2 was headed to Barnes Middle School and Seguin High School with 9 children on board, when the unexpected happened along Hwy 123: troopers say a PT Cruiser had moved to the shoulder to allow an 18-wheeler to pass.

It was a courtesy that officers say became complicated.

Trooper Reyes added, “It was at that time that the PT Cruiser was clipped. Once it was clipped, it forced it into the northbound lane of traffic, striking the school bus head on.”

That set-off a chain reaction and a fire, which quickly spread to the four vehicles, charring the twisted mass as children and drivers scurried for safety. All 13-people would be injured, but survived.

Firefighters found the cab of the bus separated from its wheels and upside down. School officials said the bus was 3-weeks old with a modern design that allowed the chassis to detach in a collision, minimizing the impact on passengers.

Seguin ISD spokesperson Sean Hoffmann said, “The fact that the body of the bus isn’t connected to the frame probably saved lives today.”

Hoffman said the bus was unusually unoccupied. Many of the high school seniors had the day off, because students in schools statewide are taking the STARR exams. Hoffmann said the injured students will have to make-up that test at a later date.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s accident reconstruction team is combing through the wreckage, because troopers say the accident had all the right ingredients of a mass-casualty event.

But, it also had the right people responding at the right time.

“The true heroes in this were some workers on their way to work from Halliburton. From what I was told they helped remove a lot of students from the bus and direct traffic. We got to give praise to those guys,” said Reyes.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was flown to University Hospital in critical condition. The school bus driver and one student are at San Antonio area hospitals. The other victims received treatment at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin.

GRMC spokesperson Kelsey Stewart said the hospital brought in extra staff to help direct families and coordinate care for the victims.

Woman killed in I-805 crash identified

A grandmother killed in a crash while on her way to Disneyland with her family was identified Thursday as 65-year-old Laura Hall of San Diego.

Hall was riding in the back seat of a black Toyota Rav4 that was going north on Interstate 805 about 6:35 a.m. Wednesday when the SUV was struck by a car near Sorrento Valley Road, officials said.

That driver told officers that she swerved to avoid a beige or silver Honda sedan that made an illegal lane change in front of her. That car did not stop.

The SUV flipped over several times and came to rest on a concrete divider where it ended up perched precariously above a 30-foot drop at a construction site.

The driver of the SUV, Brian D. Thomas, 43, suffered broken ribs, cuts and bruises, according to the California Highway Patrol. His wife, Rebecca A. Thomas, 42, the right-front passenger, suffered minor injuries.

The couple’s 8-year-old son was in the back seat, along with Daniesha L. Thomas, 22. They suffered lacerations and bruises. Hall also was in the back seat.

Hall was taken unresponsive to a hospital with several internal injuries where she died at 10:33 a.m. Wednesday, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Hall, who was a widow, lived with her family in San Diego.

Motorcyclist Run Over By Big Rig

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) — All lanes of Business 80 have reopened after a deadly crash Thursday morning that closed the eastbound side of the highway for more than four hours.

A man on a motorcycle lost control and crashed onto the concrete just before 5 a.m. near Arden Way — a wreck that might have been weather-related, the California Highway Patrol said.

A big rig driver behind him couldn’t stop in time to avoid the collision, and ended up running the man over, according to the CHP. The motorcyclist was hit by a second vehicle and died instantly at the crash scene, police said.

Traffic was backed up for about two miles in the area after the accident, but cars were soon after re-routed off the freeway to avoid the scene entirely.

The big rig driver said the air brakes on his truck went out, and he couldn’t avoid hitting the man. At first, he didn’t even realize it was a person who he had struck, police said.
