Santa Paula man killed after a vehicle hit an RV at Faria Beach Park
A Santa Paula man was killed and four people were injured this morning after a vehicle hit a motor home parked at the Faria Beach campground in Ventura, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Officers said 20-year old Abram Pineda of Santa Paula was driving southbound on Highway 101 in the 5000 block of west Pacific Coast Highway at about 5:40 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and drove off the main road.
The vehicle’s right front end struck a motorhome that was parked on the right shoulder, which then struck a parked trailer.
The passenger in the vehicle, Victor Arenas, 20, died at the scene, CHP officials said.
Pineda tried to flee the scene on foot but was detained by witnesses, officials said.
Another passenger in the vehicle, 20-year old Anthony Daniel Saenz of Santa Paula sustained minor injuries. The passengers in the motorhome, 72-year old Peggy Booth and 66-year old James Booth of Oxnard also sustained minor injuries.
A passenger in the trailer, 56-year old Clara Glanville of Fillmore, also sustained minor injuries.
All five people were taken to Ventura County Medical Center where they were treated for injuries, county fire department officials said.
An autopsy to determine Arenas’ cause of death will be done Monday, said James Baroni, Ventura County chief deputy medical examiner.
Cause of the Ventura Crash
The collision is still under investigation, but CHP officials said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident. Pineda was arrested, but CHP officials have not determined his charges.

Corcoran man killed in Hwy. 33 collision
A 19-year-old local resident was killed in a head-on collision this morning after trying to pass another vehicle on Highway 43, investigators said.
The victim, possibly a Corcoran resident, was pronounced dead at the scene around 5:30 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, he and the other driver were trapped in their cars and had to be cut free using the Jaws of Life.
The CHP believes the victim was heading north on 43, just passed Cairo Avenue, when he drove into oncoming traffic to get around a slow-moving vehicle.
His red Mazda Miata first slammed into the front end of a Nissan Altima, before continuing on and colliding with a Honda Civic also headed south.
The Altima’s driver, 34-year-old Susan Pulido of Merced, was taken by ambulance to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for emergency treatment. Investigators said she suffered major injuries.
The crash blocked traffic through Highway 43 for about an hour this morning, until emergency workers cleared the scene around 6:30.
The fatal victim’s name is being withheld until his family can be notified.
Cause of the Kings County Crash
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened about 5:30 a.m. as the man drove north the highway north of Cairo Avenue. The CHP said the man moved his Mazda Miata into the southbound lane to pass a car and collided with a Honda driven by Susan Pulido, 34, of Merced.

Bicyclist Hurt after Crash between Two SUVs in Fountain Valley
According to the Fountain Valley Police Department a bicyclist was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after a collision between two SUVs caused one of the vehicles to veer and strike him.
Officers and paramedics responded to the traffic accident at the Bushard Street and Talbert Avenue intersection just before 2:30 p.m.
Investigators believe that two SUVs collided in the intersection, with one veering off the roadway and striking the bicyclist, who was waiting on a corner for the traffic lights to change, Fountain Valley police Lt. Rob Sweaza said.
The bicyclist, a 29-year-old Huntington Beach man, was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, but was expected to survive.

Customer injured in Stanton doughnut shop crash

A doughnut shop customer was critically injured when a car crashed into the business Tuesday morning. According to Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority, the crash was reported at 9:50 a.m. near the intersection of Western and Katella avenues.
Lori Wertz, 53, was turning into the parking lot of the business and continued to drive into the shop, said Lt. Roland Chacon of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Why Wertz, a New Mexico resident, was unable to stop was not immediately known, he said.
A customer inside the shop suffered a large cut to his right forearm, he said.
He was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange to be treated, Stone said.
The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The driver was shaken, but not injured in the crash, said Lt. Roland Chacon of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Cause of the Orange County Crash
How the crash occurred is still under investigation, but authorities said a driver crashed her vehicle through the business, sending glass from the window toward a customer in the shop. Deputies are investigating the crash.

Boy killed in Oregon 3-car wreck, driver arrested

BEAVERTON — A 10-year-old boy was killed, his mother critically injured, and a Vancouver woman arrested in a three-car accident Sunday evening on SW Canyon Road near Linden Road.
A Chevy Avalanche crossed the center line about 7:50 p.m. and side-swiped a Toyota Prius. The Avalanche continued on and hit an Acura TL sedan.
The left front wheel of the Avalanche had been sheared off. The Acura was heavily damaged on the driver side.
The mother and two children, one of them the 10-year-old, were in the Acura. The mother was taken to Legacy Emanuel hospital in critical condition. A 15-year-old son was also taken to Emanuel with cuts and bruises. They had to be extricated from the car by Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews.
Those who were in the Avalanche were all standing outside it when officers arrived and initially were uncooperative in identifying the driver. As the investigation continued, officers concluded that Paige D. Couch, 38, was behind the wheel.
The wreck closed Canyon Road for several hours.
Cause of the Oregon Crash
Officers determined that an eastbound Chevy Avalanche crossed the center line about 7:50 p.m. and side-swiped a Toyota Prius. The Avalanche continued on and hit an Acura TL sedan. There were signs of “alcohol impairment” with the driver, said Beaverton police spokeswoman Pam Yazzolino She was taken to the Washington County jail and held on accusations of second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault and fourth-degree assault. Though there were signs of alcohol impairment, police had not issued a DUI citation. The accident remains under investigation.

Folsom Man Charged In Double-Fatal Crash On Folsom Boulevard

FOLSOM (CBS13) – A Folsom man was arrested Sunday for causing an accident that killed two people on Folsom Boulevard on Saturday night.
At 6:45 p.m. Michael Sharp, 21, was driving his SUV on southbound Folsom Boulevard when he crossed over the double yellow line and hit an oncoming sedan, killing two people inside, according to Folsom Police.

Investigators say Sharp was driving while intoxicated. He was arrested on two charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and drug impaired driving causing serious injury or death. Sharp was injured and not booked into jail.
Toxicology tests will be conducted to reveal what intoxicant was in Sharp’s bloodstream.

Coroner IDs Woodlander who died after CR-102, I-5 vehicle accident in Woodland

Yolo County’s Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash has identified the man who died in a single-car crash Friday night off of County Road 102 and Interstate 5.
Robert Dale Sunderland III, 25, of Woodland, died Friday night around 9:44 p.m. at the scene of the accident, LaBrash told The Democrat Saturday afternoon. Emergency workers had attempted to resuscitate Sunderland before he succumbed to his injuries.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, LaBrash said.
Two other passengers from Woodland suffered major injuries and the driver, who the California Highway Patrol says was under the influence of alcohol, sustained minor injuries.
LaBrash said he had no information on the conditions of the other passengers, who were sent to UC Davis Medical Center and Kaiser South.
The CHP had no news on the conditions of the other passengers as of 4:15 p.m. Saturday.
Officials have not released the names of any of the individuals involved in the incident other than Sunderland.
Witnesses alerted authorities of the accident around 9 p.m. and tried to provide assistance, the CHP said.
Due to the severity of the accident as reported by witnesses, two helicopters were immediately dispatched to the scene, along with two ambulances and emergency vehicles from the CHP, Woodland Fire Department, Woodland Police Department and Yolo County Sheriff’s Department.
Emergency officials were on scene within four minutes.

Officials quickly closed off CR-102 from the freeway to Gateway Plaza and set up a helicopter-landing zone on CR-102 in front of the former Chevron Service Station south of the overpass.

According to initial reports from the CHP, the accident was caused when a 22-year-old Sacramento man lost control of his 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse while going southbound on I-5 on the CR-102 off-ramp. The car then traveled onto the shoulder and overturned a number of times before coming to rest on its roof. The unidentified driver was flown by helicopter to UCD Medical Center for treatment. He was later arrested for felony driving under the influence and felony manslaughter.

CHP releases details of fatal Victorville crash
A head-on crash today along Highway 18 near Victorville killed a 72-year-old San Bernardino man and badly hurt a 31-year-old Pinon Hills motorist, according to California Highway Patrol investigators.
The wreck was reported at 6:36 a.m. today east of Caughlin Road, about eight miles west of Interstate 15.
Ronald Lee Cuellar spotted the on-coming car and hit the brakes but wasn’t able to avoid the collision, according to the statement. Cuellar suffered head injuries and a possibly broken right ankle, officers reported.
The crew of a medical helicopter flew Cullear to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
The wrong-way motorist died at the scene of the crash. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The roadway was closed for about 90 minutes.

The elderly driver from San Bernardino was driving a blue 2008 Ford Focus west along Highway 18 when he crossed the double yellow line and into the path of an eastbound white 2003 Toyota Corolla, Officer Zoaquin Zubieta (CHP) said in a written statement.

Car accident with fatality on U.S. 101 safety corridor

The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman killed in a crash on U.S. Highway 101 between Eureka and Arcata this morning as 54-year-old Kathleen Jennings, of Arcata.
Coroner Dave Parris said Jennings was killed on impact when her car, which was reportedly traveling southbound in a northbound lane, collided head-on with another vehicle. Parris said the other driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but officers at the scene said his injuries are not life threatening.
The collision which occurred just north of the Bayside Cutoff and closed both northbound lanes of the freeway for about two hours.

The crash remains under investigation and the California Highway Patrol is expected to release more information today.

San Jose: 25-year-old woman is city’s first traffic fataility of the year
In San Jose’s first traffic fatality of the year, a 25-year-old woman was killed in a car accident this morning, according to police, when her car was struck by two others in foggy conditions on Curtner Avenue.
Emergency workers closed Curtner in both directions, from Meridian Avenue to Custer Drive, as they investigated the crash and cleared the roadway.
The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. when the woman at an intersection — which does not have a traffic signal — pulled her 1990s Honda Civic from Dumbarton Drive into eastbound traffic on Curtner, police said. She was struck by two vehicles: a Range Rover and a Honda Element. She as pronounced dead at Valley Medical center at 8:02 a.m.
As of this morning, police had not identified the dead woman.
Cause of the San Jose Crash
The cause of the January 3, 2011 crash remains under investigation by the San Jose Police Department. Police said there was no immediate evidence that either the victim or drivers of the other vehicles were intoxicated.
