Fatal Accident on 18 near Big Bear

A stretch of Highway 18 near Baldwin Lake has reopened after being closed for more than six hours due to a collision earlier today between a big rig trailer and an SUV that killed a Big Bear City woman and injured her 16-year-old passenger.

The 37-year-old woman, Lili De Coronado, was at the wheel of a 2006 Kia Sorrento traveling east on Highway 18 just east of Paradise Way about 11 a.m., said Officer Benjamin Baker, spokesman for the Arrowhead area office of the Highway Patrol, in a news release.

At the same time, Fred Riley, 51, of Menifee, was traveling west on 18 in a Peterbilt dump truck pulling a dump trailer, Baker said. As he entered a leftward curve in the road, Riley’s truck ran up on the right shoulder of the roadway, the trailer colliding with the mountainside.

The collision separated the gravel box from the trailer’s frame, the box coming to rest in the opposing lane, Baker said. The trailer frame bounced into the opposing lane and slammed into the Kia.

The Kia’s driver was taken to Bear Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Baker said. The 16-year-old girl was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with unspecified injuries. Her condition was not being made public.

The collision closed the highway between Paradise Way and Baldwin Lake Road for most of the day, while investigators tried to piece together what happened and crews worked to remove about 12 tons of cinders dumped on the road when the trailer was wrecked. It reopened about 5:45 p.m.

CHP continues to investigate the accident.

Fiery Big Rig Crash Creates Traffic Nightmare on 10 Freeway

MONTCLAIR, Calif. (KTLA) — A fiery crash involving a big rig created a traffic nightmare on the 10 Freeway in Montclair early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday on the westbound 10 at Monte Vista.

The diver of a Mercedes lost control for unknown reasons and hit a big rig, according to the CHP.

The big rig driver swerved to the left and struck a Nissan.

Both the Nissan and the semi then crashed into the center divider.

One of the rig’s diesel tanks landed in the eastbound lanes and ruptured.

That’s when the semi caught fire. It took over an hour to extinguish the flames.

The driver of the semi truck was airlifted to County USC Medical Center.

The driver of one of the vehicles had to be extricated with the jaws of life. That person was airlifted to Loma Linda hospital.

Their injuries were non-life threatening, according to the CHP.

Crews used cranes to upright the big rig, which was then towed away on a flat bed truck.

Hazmat personnel were also on scene to clean-up fuel spilled from the semi.

Crews will return later to repair the center divider, the CHP said.

Both the westbound and eastbound lanes were reopened by 6:30 a.m., but traffic remained slow.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Muni driver charged with vehicular manslaughter

The Muni bus driver who struck and killed a 23-year-old woman in a Castro District crosswalk last summer has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter.

He was arrested Saturday and released on $10,000 bail. His arraignment has been set for Friday.

The operator, identified by authorities as Wallace Loggins, was driving his empty bus to a new a new assignment across town on the afternoon of Aug. 19 when he ran over Emily Dunn.

Dunn had almost reached the curb when the 40-foot bus struck her. Loggins was making a left turn from 18th Street onto Hartford Street, a narrow street with no regular Muni service in a largely residential area.

On-board video surveillance tape showed the driver apparently looking in his side-view mirror and not at what was going on in front of him when Dunn was run over, investigators found. There was no indication that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In the previous five years, the annual number of Muni-related fatalities was four or five, with the exception of 2009 when there was one.

The district attorney determined that Loggins, 36, who began driving for Muni last January, was negligent for not seeing Dunn crossing the street.

Bus Accidents and Wrongful Death Liability

Vehicle rollover on Hwy. 99 ejects one, injures three

Three women were injured about 10 a.m. today when a Toyota Tacoma pickup flipped over while passing a big rig on Highway 99, just north of Nelson-Shippee Road.

The pickup came to rest upside down in a flooded rice field.

A passenger sitting on a bench seat between the driver and a passenger wasn’t wearing a seat belt, and was ejected. Identified as Arin Oshiro, 20, of Chico, the woman suffered moderate injuries. She was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The driver, identified as Ayumi Yoshihama, 21, and a second passenger, Saho Takiduchi, 21, both of Chico, were also transported to a local hospital, but had less serious injuries.

The two women were briefly trapped inside the vehicle.

Cause of the Richvale crash

Based on the information provided by news reports, it appears the driver may likely be at fault for the collision due to traveling at “a high rate of speed.” However, the California Highway Patrol will determine other possible factors that could have contributed to the crash such as distracted driving, negligent or reckless actions by the driver, and road conditions.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver, traveling south, lost control during the pass, went back across the highway, then hit a dirt berm, launching the vehicle into the air. Investigators added that  the driver may have been startled when her vehicle went over a rumble strip.

Jury awards $1M to teens in ‘choking game’ lawsuit

A Clarendon County jury awarded a $1 million verdict Thursday to the families of two boys allegedly forced to play “the choking game” with a volunteer counselor at Clemson University’s Camp Bob Cooper in 2008.

Ronald Edward “Eddie” Riley, then 17, served as a junior counselor to boys ages 12 and younger at the camp on Lake Marion in Summerton. He outweighed each of the campers by at least 100 pounds, according to court records.

Riley grabbed the boys and attempted to choke or successfully choked four of them, arrest reports say.

The so-called “choking game” causes a brief high but comes with the risk of serious injury or death.

The criminal case against Riley, now 21, remains open.

The civil trial that ended Thursday accused the federal program, Operation: Military Kid, Clemson and its Youth Learning Institute and Camp Bob Cooper, of negligence. The verdict awards $500,000 to each boy’s family.

Both military families lived in Summerville at the time of the incident but both have been restationed in other cities since then. Their lawyer, David Savage of Charleston, said the camp placed Riley in charge of young boys without training or supervision.

“He made a MySpace page of himself holding a knife up to his lips saying, ‘Be quiet. This is going to hurt.’ That’s how he advertised himself,” Savage said. “They did no background check on him.”

Clemson University spokeswoman Cathy Sams said Camp Bob Cooper has implemented standards for camper supervision in the years since the incident. She criticized the jury’s decision Thursday.

“We believe the award is excessive, is not supported by the facts in the case, and we will appeal,” Sams said.

Sams said the 2008 incident marked the first of its kind in Camp Bob Cooper’s 50-year history.

The Centers for Disease Control said in 2008 that 82 children had died from the “choking game,” a fad popular for the euphoric, dreamlike feeling caused as blood rushes back to the brain.

Seeking Justice For Victims of Abuse

Abuse perpetrated by an authority figure is an appalling reality for far too many children and adolescents  across the country. Foster care parents, teachers, day care workers, and other trusted adults who negligently supervise children ruin lives and cause irreparable psychological damage and death.

The individual foster care parent can be tried as a criminal, but can rarely be held financially accountable. His or her sponsoring or employing organization—the foster care agency, or other public or corporate entity—may be liable for its failure to adequately supervise and screen the foster care parent.

If you have been seriously injured or a family member sustained fatal injuries involving  abuse, you need to contact the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler or another experienced law firm immediately to protect your legal rights and preserve the evidence.  Claims for damages against a public entity or governmental entity are complex and they have “strict time limitations”.  So do not delay and contact the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler today!

Driver, victim in fatal San Miguel Canyon crash identified

An Aptos teen who crashed a van filled with young adults on San Miguel Canyon Road on Friday night, killing a 21-year-old passenger, has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as Erica Shanice Duran.

The passenger who died was Joshua W. Perez of Salinas, CHP Sgt. Wayne DiSalvo said.

Duran, 19, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, DiSalvo said.

She had six passengers in the 1993 Honda van when she crashed at about 9:35 p.m. east of Corto San Miguel Road, not far from Hall Road, the CHP said.

A witness driving behind the van told officers she was traveling at a high rate of speed when she tried to pass another vehicle by crossing over double-yellow lines, lost control and struck a tree, DiSalvo said.

“It’s just tragic that they were not taking driving under the influence seriously,” he said. “And at high speed over double-yellow lines, especially on San Miguel Canyon, that’s just a recipe for death.” Two of the passengers were sitting on people’s laps, DiSalvo said.

And though Friday three people were listed as having major injuries, including the driver, by Monday all but one had been reclassified as having minor or moderate ones, he said.

A 24-year-old Watsonville woman remains in critical condition at a regional trauma center, DiSalvo said.

Also in the van were two teen girls from Watsonville, ages 17 and 19, and two men from Salinas, one of them Perez, ages 19 and 24.

Drug- impaired driving accident wrongful death liability
