Redwood City Man Killed, Rear-Ended By Big Rig

INDIO, Calif. — A man from Northern California is dead and several others are injured after a crash involving two big rigs and three cars on Interstate 10.
The California Highway Patrol confirms all eastbound lanes of the freeway reopened to traffic around 10:30 a.m. after the accident forced them to shut down the freeway at the Monroe Street exit and divert traffic to Jefferson and Indio Blvd.
The collision, which happened at 8 a.m., involved a tractor-trailer that jackknifed across the eastbound lanes, which caused a chain-reaction collision involving another big rig and three cars, according to the CHP.
Harry Griffith, 53, of Redwood City, was killed when his car was rear-ended by a big-rig, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the jackknifed truck, 52-year-old Howard Sands, and another driver, 61-year-old Stephen Dehn, of Palm Springs were taken via helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center with moderate to major injuries.
A dog belonging to one of the truck drivers was rescued by deputies on the scene, and was sent to the Animal Campus in Thousand Palms.
Cause of the Indio Accident
Although the CHP is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision, based on the information reported, it appears that the driver of one of the big-rigs may be responsible for this accident.

Clovis Unified Fires Teacher Accused of Molestation
Clovis Unified has fired a teacher accused of molesting a child. It comes over month after a second grade teacher was arrested and charged with child pornography and sexual abuse.
Clovis School Board President says, “We have sought the truth, however painful because the truth is what will help us to heal.”
Heal after shocking allegations came forward at Freedom Elementary. 44-year-old Neng Yang is accused of using his power as teacher to take advantage of a second grade girl.
He was arrested back in January and has since pleaded not guilty to child pornography and 45 counts of sexual abuse.
On Monday, the Clovis Unified School Board met behind closed doors to vote on whether Yang should have a job.
The closed session meeting took under five minutes before Van Volkinburg announced the decision. He says, “Our action today brings closure to employment of the individual at the center of recent disturbing events in our district.”
By law, Clovis Unified had to wait 30 days. The time allowed Yang a chance to defend himself. School officials say that day has come and gone.
In a court room, Yang is still innocent until proven guilty, but school officials say there was enough evidence to take action now before a ruling is made.
Yang is behind bars at the Fresno County Jail. His bail is set at $4.5 million. He’s due in Federal Court on April 9th.

Boy drowns in swimming pool

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. (WSVN) — Officials are investigating why a young boy died after drowning in a South Florida apartment complex’s swimming pool.
A 7-year-old boy and his father were attending a barbecue by pool of an apartment complex along Northeast 41st Street, Sunday evening.
Residents were gathered around pool and young kids were swimming at the event. At some point, the boy began drowning. “From my window I saw the family trying to give CPR to the little boy,” said neighbor Rick Izquierdo. “When I saw that right away I took my wife’s cell phone and I start calling 911.”
According to police, the boy’s father jumped into the water and took the boy out. He then began CPR on his son before paramedics arrived. “[Father] jumped in right away, started doing CPR, trying to save his son,” said Keyla Concepcion of the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue transported the boy to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Residents who live in the complex are stunned at the drowning.
“It’s really sad,” said Shentell Nelson.
Nelson has a 3-year-old son and advises adults to pay attention to surroundings. “It is shocking, especially if there’s kids around, you should always be alert and try to focus on what’s going on.”
Nelson said swimming lessons are a must for children. “I thinks that’s one step that you really need to train your child to do at a young age,” she said.
According to residents at the party, there were a lot of people around when it happened and a lot of screaming, trying to get control of the situation. “I didn’t see what happened, I don’t know what happened because earlier before that everything was OK,” said a resident. “Every kid was jumping in the pool, back and forth, jump in, go eat, come back, so I don’t know how this happened to him, because we pay attention to him and tell him stop jumping.”
Authorities have not released the name of the victim.
BSO is looking into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
