Five-vehicle collision kills 91-year-old man
Cathedral City — A Tacoma, Wash., man died Thursday after his car was crushed in a five-vehicle collision that shut down a Cathedral City intersection for much of the day.
Paramedics rushed Neil McConaghy, 91, to a hospital after a Ford F550 smashed into his Chrysler PT Cruiser at 9:06 a.m. along Date Palm Drive at Ramon Road, investigators said.
He was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m. at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, according to the Riverside County coroner.
Elsy Escobar watched as emergency crews removed McConaghy from his car.
He was bleeding and not moving.
The truck driver, whose name was not released, was critically injured and was also rushed to Desert Regional.
According to Escobar, the truck driver “panicked and was very scared” after getting out of his vehicle.
His F550 sideswiped a parked SunLine Transit Agency bus on northbound Date Palm, police said.
The truck then crashed into the PT Cruiser, which was stopped at the intersection, and pushed it into a Lexus SUV waiting in a westbound turn lane.
They all hit an eastbound Ford Mustang that was turning north from Ramon onto Date Palm.
“The big white truck basically ran over the top of that tiny blue car and mowed it through the intersection,” Robinson said.
A man in either the Mustang or Lexus was treated at Desert Regional after complaining of pain.
The police investigation closed the intersection until about 3 p.m.
Drugs or alcohol were said not to be factors.
The city installed cameras at the high-traffic intersection in 2006 following a number of crashes, officials said at the time.
Felix Izurieta, who owns Park View Optical, 68-955 Ramon Road, No. 6, said he’s seen several crashes in the area over the years.
He pulled into his driveway 45 minutes after Thursday’s collision.
The first thing he saw was the demolished PT Cruiser beneath the white truck with vehicles scattered across the intersection.
“It seemed like mayhem out there; just pure destruction,” Izurieta said.
Cause of the Cathedral City Crash
The official cause of the fatal accident has not been determined. Cathedral City Police will rely heavily on traffic cameras to determine the crash’s cause.

Fatal 2-Car Collision on 101 Fwy in Studio City Snarls Morning Traffic
One person was killed and two others were injured today in a two-vehicle crash on the eastbound Ventura (101) Freeway in the Studio City area, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash near Coldwater Canyon Avenue was reported at 3:44 a.m. and prompted the closure of all lanes of the eastbound side of the freeway, said CHP Officer Patrick Kimball. Two lanes were reopened shortly before 5 a.m., he said.
CHP Sergeant Abramian told news agencies that as CHP officers were investigating the accident, “It looks like these were two individual accidents. The white vehicle (the Toyota Matrix) lost control and stabilized; then the Honda collided with it.”.”
Los Angeles Fire Department rescuers freed a man and a woman from a Toyota Matrix and took them to a hospital, according to a news crew at the scene. Both appeared to be seriously injured.
Asked if intoxication may have contributed to the crash, Abramian said, “We’re still investigating, but through our search we did find some evidence in one of the vehicles. We’re going to the hospital to talk to some of the victims.”
A man in a Honda Element suffered less serious injuries and was also taken from the scene in an ambulance, the news crew reported.
Cause of the Studio City Crash
The cause of the fatal collision is under investigation, but the California Highway Patrol did say that in their preliminary investigation evidence of alcohol was found in one of the vehicles . No arrests were reported.

Speeding, alcohol blamed in SoCal crash that killed 3 Marines
DANA POINT – Alcohol and unsafe speed were the primary causes of a Dana Point crash that killed three Camp Pendleton-based U.S. Marines and left a fourth serviceman fighting for his life, a sheriff’s spokesman said Wednesday.
The rain-slick roadway was a lesser contributing factor to the crash that occurred at 2:05 a.m. Tuesday, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
He said the lone survivor, who was behind the wheel, remains in extremely critical condition at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
The Marines were in a Dodge Stratus that crashed into a tree at Golden Lantern Street just past Terra Vista. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to cut through the wreckage to get to the servicemen, who were all in their early 20s, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone.
The two men in the back seat were declared dead at the scene, and the driver and another man in the front passenger seat were taken to Mission Hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Stratus was northbound on Golden Lantern at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the car, which hit a curb before slamming into a tree just past Terra Vista, Amormino said. The names of the victims were expected to be released late this afternoon by military officials.

Tulare woman killed in rollover at J Street and Highway 99
A woman killed in a single-car rollover north of Tulare early Sunday morning has been identified as Rosa Estrada, 22, of Tulare, said the Tulare County Sheriff-Coroner’s office.
The California Highway Patrol said Estrada was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car when it overturned off the J Street onramp onto Highway 99 north of Tulare at 1:20 a.m. Sunday.
The driver, Giovanni Ferreira, 22, of Visalia, was northbound on the J Street onramp when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road, the CHP said. Ferreira’s 2005 Toyota Corolla ran through a metal guard rail and overturned several times. Ferreira was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries. He was treated at Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia.
Cause of the Tulare Crash
If news accounts are accurate, the driver Giovanni Ferreira, 22, of Visalia, is likely responsible for causing this accident. However, the accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and an official determination of the cause of the Tulare County crash has not been made. The CHP did say that alcohol was a contributing factor in the collision.

Indio: Four injured in two-car collision
A two-vehicle Indio crash that left four people hospitalized remained under investigation today.
The collision was reported around 11:15 p.m. Sunday on Avenue 50 near Monroe Street, Indio Police Department spokesman Ben Guitron said.
A man and a woman in a Toyota Corolla suffered major injuries, he said.
The woman was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center, and the man was
taken to Eisenhower Medical Center.
A man and a woman in a Jeep Liberty were also taken to Eisenhower Medical Center for treatment of moderate injuries, Guitron said.
Two of the victims had to be cut out of the wreckage of their vehicle, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
“Preliminary investigation indicated that the Jeep was going westbound on Avenue 50 and the Corolla was going eastbound on 50,” Guitron said.
Liability for Indio Car Accidents
Seeking immediate counsel from an experienced Indio automobile accident attorney is well-advised following a car crash. In severe accidents such as this one the victims would benefit from speaking to an Indio personal injury lawyer regarding the protection of their legal rights and the compensation they are entitled to. And while it is uncertain who is liable for this incident, an attorney can also hire a highly skilled independent investigator to reconstruct the scene of the accident and determine who is responsible.

One-car fatality linked to intoxication
A one-car accident at the junction of state Route 163 and Interstate 8 left one person dead and two others injured early Sunday. It also closed part of the interchange for about two hours.
At about 3:25 a.m., the driver of a Chevrolet HHR was traveling fast through the transition road from northbound Route 163 to the eastbound interstate, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle flipped, ejecting two of three passengers. One passenger died, another suffered minor injuries and a third sustained major injuries, according to CHP. It said the driver appeared uninjured but will be charged with felony DUI and manslaughter.
The name of the dead passenger has not been released.
Cause of the San Diego County Crash
As a passenger, the deceased likely could have done nothing to prevent this fatal roll over collision that ultimately took their life. The California Highway Patrol will surely look at the speed of the vehicle, witness reports, and other factors to determine what occurred and who was responsible. roll over collisions such as this one can have countless causes, including unsafe passing maneuvers, swerving to avoid an object in the road, falling asleep at the wheel, driving under the influence, or driver distraction.
According to the California Highway Patrol the crash was “due to the driver’s state of intoxication, the driver failed to maintain effective control of the vehicle, which ran off the left side of the roadway”.

PALM DESERT: I-10 crash kills infant
A nine-month-old Coachella girl was fatally hurt and a 2-year-old boy was critically injured this week during a traffic collision along Interstate 10 near Palm Desert while riding in car seats that weren’t properly secured, California Highway Patrol officers say.
Nevaeh Sessoms died about an hour after the 6:45 p.m. three-vehicle wreck Sunday along the freeway’s westbound lanes near the Monterey Avenue overcrossing, Riverside County coroner’s officials say.
The children were riding in a 1997 Saturn SL4 being driven by 21-year-old Alyissa Gross of Coachella when the car pulled into the traffic lanes from the center median and was rear-ended by a 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 45-year-old Milo Santilli of Orange, Officer Joe Zagorski said in a written statement.
The Saturn then hit the center divider guardrail, before spinning back across the westbound lanes and into the path of a 1997 Ford F-150 driven by James Stone Jr. of San Diego, according to the statement.
Everyone in the Saturn – Alyissa Gross, 19-year-old Elizabeth Gross and the two children – were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center.
Cause of the Palm Desert Crash
Cause of the accident wasn’t immediately determined.
“The reasons why the … Saturn was entering traffic lanes from the center median also is not known,” Officer Zagorski of the California Highway Patrol wrote. The collision remains under investigation.

4 injured in multivehicle crash on I-5 off-ramp

SAN CLEMENTE – Four people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving a big-rig at a freeway off-ramp Monday morning, authorities said.
Two people were reported in critical condition after the crash, and authorities shut down Avenida Pico near the I-5 as firefighters tried to cut one person out of their wrecked vehicle, officials said.
Details on how the crash occurred were not immediately clear, but officials received reports that a big-rig was broadsided by a sedan at the freeway off-ramp, said Lt. Roland Chacon of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
A box truck and an SUV were also reported to be involved, authorities said.
The crash was reported near the Avenida Pico off-ramp at about 11 a.m., where at least one woman was trapped inside the wreck, said Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.
The crash happened on the off-ramp, but the impact pushed the crash into the intersection, Quesada said.
The two people in critical condition were taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo to be treated, Stone said. One person declined to be treated at the scene, and a fourth person suffered minor injuries.
Avenida Pico has been shut down to traffic, Chacon said, and officials requested assistance from city officials to divert traffic away from the area.
Cause of the San Clemente Crash
The crash remains under investigation and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is expected to release more information as it becomes available.
