Tehachapi woman killed in accident with big rig
A Tehachapi woman was killed in a traffic accident in Bakersfield on March 8, according to a press release from the Kern County Coroner’s office.
The accident occurred at 8:16 p.m. at the intersection of Edison Highway and Comanche Dr. in Bakersfield.
Jaimy Norene Gentry, 47, was reported to have been driving an auto that was struck by a big rig. She was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Ms. Gentry was heading south on Comanche Drive in a Mitsubishi Eclipse as a big rig hauling a dump trailer of gypsum was traveling west on Edison Highway. The driver of the semi reportedly is from Corcoran and was coming from Nevada and had exited the freeway to go to a truck stop.
The semi driver failed to stop at the stop sign and struck the Eclipse in the intersection. Both vehicles traveled west and hit a Chevy Cobalt that was going east on Edison Highway.
Two women in the Cobalt were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the CHP said. The semi driver was not injured.
Cause of the Kern County Crash
Although the CHP is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision, based on the information reported, it appears that the driver of the big-rig may be responsible for this accident.

Both directions of the road were closed while police collected evidence and crews work to clear the wrecked vehicles.

The motorcycle rider was taken by ambulance to a site where he could be airlifted to a hospital, but was pronounced dead before the chopper arrived, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Nick Schuler.

Woman killed in Camarillo crash identified
The woman killed in a Camarillo traffic collision Monday night was a 69-year-old Fillmore resident who recently moved to Ventura County from North Carolina, authorities said today.
Antje Curphey was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near the intersection of Carmen Drive and Las Posas Road, said Chief Deputy Ventura County Medical Examiner James Baroni.
Curphey was riding in a car driven by her daughter about 6:35 p.m. when the crash occurred.
Richena Curphey, 31, of Fillmore was making a left turn from westbound Las Posas onto Carmen Drive when her car was hit by a pickup truck driven by Christy Dungey, 51, of Ventura, authorities said. The truck struck the car on the passenger side where Antje Curphey was sitting.
The pickup came to rest on its roof along the sidewalk after the crash, which left the roadway littered with debris. The intersection was partly closed after the collision.
Dungey and Richena Curphey were taken to the hospital for treatment. Both were alert and conscious at the scene, and their injuries did not appear life-threatening, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Renee Ferguson.
It appeared that everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, Ferguson said.
Near a residential area and a business park, the intersection where the crash occurred is controlled by traffic lights.
Antje Curphey had just moved from North Carolina to Fillmore a few weeks ago, Baroni said.
Cause of the Camarillo crash
The official cause of the fatal accident has not been determined. Camarillo Police will rely heavily on traffic cameras to determine the crash’s cause. The cause of the crash remained unclear as the investigation continued today.\

Drunken driver kills 3, causes 8-car pileup in Monterey County

Three Bay Area residents on their way home from a funeral were killed in an eight-car pileup on Highway 101 in Monterey County that police are blaming on a drunken driver.
Vivian Ramirez, 42, lost control of her southbound Ford SUV, swerved across the dirt median and slammed into the family’s two-car caravan near Jolon Road, said Highway Patrol Officer Zoltan Treiner.
Ramirez was intoxicated and lost control of the car after reaching for her cell phone just before the Wednesday night crash, police said.
Four people were in the first car, a Volkswagen sedan driven by Rafael Llamas, 37, who died after he was ejected through the windshield. Passenger Graciela Llamas, 39, also died at the scene. Both lived in Napa. A second passenger, Maria Ochoa, 53, of Pleasanton died Thursday at Fresno Community Hospital.
The Volkswagen’s fourth passenger, who is also from Pleasanton, is clinging to life at San Jose Regional Medical Center, authorities said.
It is unclear how the four victims were related, authorities said.
Police say Ramirez also smashed head-on with the second car in the family’s caravan. One passenger in that 2009 Toyota was taken to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries.
Ramirez, a resident of Gonzales (Monterey County), was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with major injuries. Once she is released from the hospital she’ll be arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, Treiner said.
Investigators will not know the amount of alcohol in her blood for a few days, Treiner said.
Another car driving north hit with the engine that had been ripped out of the Volkswagen. That car ran into another car, which flipped onto its side. No one in either of those cars was seriously injured.
Three other cars traveling north on 101 hit each other as they tried to avoid the crash, Treiner said. Both drivers and a passenger suffered minor injuries.

Two Hayward residents killed in I-880 crash
Two Hayward women were killed when their car stalled and were struck by another vehicle on Interstate 880 late Thursday night, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision was reported about 11:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes near Hesperian Boulevard and involved a Honda and Chevrolet, the CHP said. The Honda became disabled in one of the right lanes due to an unknown mechanical reason.
A CHP officer at a nearby traffic stop pulled in front of the stalled car to offer help. A passenger in the Honda, a 35-year-old Hayward woman, got out of her vehicle.
Moments later, a Chevrolet driven by a 58-year-old Alameda man was trying to exit the freeway on the Hesperian offramp but apparently did not see the Honda and ran into the stationary vehicle and the passenger standing outside, then clipped the CHP patrol car.
The passenger died at the scene. The driver of the stalled Honda, also a 35-year-old Hayward woman, was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The officer and the Chevrolet driver were not injured.
The fatal collision remains under investigation, and drugs or alcohol have been ruled out as a factor in the crash.

5 hurt, including Caltrans worker, in crash

PARAMOUNT, Calif. (KTLA) — Five people — including a child and a Caltrans worker — were critically injured Tuesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on the 710 Freeway.
The crash happened about 2 p.m. in the freeway’s northbound lanes near Rosecrans Avenue when a Buick Cutlass Supreme spun out of control after colliding with a semi truck without its trailer. California Highway Patrol officials said they don’t yet know why the two vehicles collided, but it’s likely one of the two was changing lanes.
The Cutlass then crashed into a female Caltrans worker, who was out of her truck picking up trash near the freeway’s right shoulder, CHP officials said. A co-worker said the woman suffered injuries to her legs and she is expected to survive.
The child — a 3-year-old boy — was one of four passengers in the Cutlass, left almost completely crushed after the accident.
Paramedics rushed all five critically-injured people to hospitals in St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
The crash caused a major traffic pile-up, as two of the six northbound lanes were closed. The Rosecrans Avenue off-ramp was also closed.
Cause of the 710 Freeway Accident
Based on the information provided by news reports, it is unclear what caused the collision between the Buick and big-rig on the freeway. However, if negligent, unsafe or distracted driving were contributing factors of the crash, the person deemed responsible can be held financially liable for the injuries the victims sustained.

One dead, one injured after car hits parked big rig in south Modesto
CERES — One man was killed and another seriously injured when their car slammed into the back of a parked big rig in south Modesto on Tuesday afternoon.
About 4:35 p.m., Modesto police responded to a call of a collision between a car and a stationary semi in the 1700 block of Morgan Road at Oates Court, just south of Hatch Road.
Police Sgt. Brian Findlen said officers arrived to find two young men, in their 20s to early 30s, pinned in a white Kia sedan.
The front of the car was wedged underneath the back right bumper of the truck’s trailer.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews worked for nearly an hour to free the driver. He was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.
“Frankly, the driver is very fortunate to be alive at this point,” Findlen said.
The identities of the driver and passenger were not released.
Findlen said the Kia was traveling southbound on Morgan when it suddenly swerved and hit the back of the parked semi-trailer.
He said eyewitnesses reported the Kia was going “at a high rate of speed.”
Findlen said it is too early to tell if alcohol or drugs were involved.
Initial reports also indicate that no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved.
Traffic on Morgan was blocked for more than three hours as crews worked on scene. The investigation is ongoing.
