RIVERSIDE: Tow-truck operator struck, killed on freeway
A tow-truck operator died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while working on the shoulder of the 91 Freeway in Riverside early Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Christopher Barton Tatro, 40, of Corona, was loading a disabled vehicle onto his flatbed truck on the side of the eastbound lanes of the freeway near Monroe Street about 2 a.m. when he was struck, a CHP news release stated.
He died at about 4:20 a.m. at Riverside Community Hospital, a Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s news release stated.
Tatro, who worked for Advanced Auto, was on the driver’s side of his tow truck operating controls to the hydraulic lift when he was hit by a tan sedan, possibly a beige late-1990s Saturn, the release stated. The car veered from the number five lane into the left side of the tow truck, then struck Tatro.
Tatro was thrown about 60 feet into traffic lanes and suffered massive injuries to his legs and torso, police said.
The driver got off the freeway at Adams Street, according to witness reports. Police believe the car suffered damage to its right side, including damage to the right wheels and headlight. The car’s right-side mirror may also be missing.
Authorities are searching for the vehicle and its driver. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol. The CHP Inland Division can be reached at 909-806-2400.

Lowell Marine killed in car crash near Calif. base
Considered a rising star in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Lowell High School, Dominic Nop spent the past four years preparing to be a Marine. When he graduated in June, he fulfilled his goal, attending basic training at Parris Island, S.C.
Nop’s dreams were cut short early Friday morning when he was killed in a car crash near a Marine base in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Nop, 18, was a passenger in the rear seat of a car when it crashed just before 2:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. According to the coroner’s statement, the car drifted off the road, crossed another lane of traffic, and struck a utility pole.
The car was driven by Herbert Jimenez, 22, of Twentynine Palms, according to San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller. Jimenez and two other unidentified passengers were transported to a local hospital and treated for light to moderate injuries.
Authorities said drinking may have played a part in the crash. “It looks like alcohol has been determined to be a factor,’’ Miller said yesterday.
Miller said no charges have been brought yet against Jiminez, but the department was in the process of forwarding a final accident report to the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office. Miller said officials were investigating whether speed was also a factor. She said she did not know if the passengers or driver of the car were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
As word spread across Lowell yesterday, people expressed shock and sadness.
“It’s terrible news,’’ Lowell Mayor James L. Milinazzo said. “He was serving his country and to be taken like that is just a terrible tragedy. We will be lowering the flag at City Hall on Monday.’’
Lowell High School’s principal, Edward Rozmiarek, called Nop a gifted student, and said grief counselors will be available tomorrow morning for students.
“We’ll also be having a moment of silence,’’ said Rozmiarek.
Nop’s family could not be reached for comment, but within the close-knit ranks of Lowell’s JROTC program, word of Nop’s death spread quickly Friday as friends texted one another and shared tributes to Nop on Facebook.
“Dominic was a role model for everybody. A lot of kids looked up to him and wanted to go into the Marines because of him,’’ said Kayla Montanez, who served with Nop in JROTC and said she spoke with him earlier this week. “He never had anything bad to say. Everything that came out of his mouth was positive.’’
Kevin Casilli, a retired Air Force master sergeant who helps oversee the Lowell JROTC program, called Nop a model student and citizen.
“He did hundreds of hours of community service and never complained,’’ Casilli said, noting that Nop would be the first to volunteer to serve in honor guard events at city parades, funerals, graduations, and inaugurations.
“He was just an extremely dedicated, selfless person who always thought of others before himself,’’ said Casilli, who last saw Nop when the young Marine returned to speak to students last month at Lowell High School. “This is such a shock.’’
Cause of the San Bernardino County Crash
Based on the information provided by news reports, it appears the driver may likely be at fault for the collision due to traveling at “a high rate of speed.” However, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will determine other possible factors that could have contributed to the crash such as distracted driving, negligent or reckless actions by the driver, and road conditions.
Car Accident Wrongful Death Liability
If it were to be determined by police that the driver is responsible for the fatal incident due to negligence or excessive speeding, the family members of the victim would be well-advise to contact a San Diego accident lawyer at the Law Offices of Gary A. Kessler. Compassionate and caring attorneys at our firm can advise the family of their legal rights, and best course of action to recover the maximum compensation for their tragic loss. Compensation in a wrongful death claim can include, funeral and burial expenses, lost earnings, loss of love, care, can companionship, or other damages in this devastating December 15th car accident.
2 dead after getting hit by Kern County patrol car
Two pedestrians — a man and a woman — were hit and killed by a Kern County Sheriff’s vehicle Friday night in Oildale, officials said.
Sheriff’s officials say 24-year-old Daniel Hiler and 30-year-old Chrystal Jolley were hit by the patrol car in Oildale around 7:30 p.m. Friday. Both died at the scene.
The accident took place at about 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Norris Road and Diane Drive near Cope’s Food Fair Market and Coronado Baptist Church.
The deputy had been driving west on Norris, responding to a call, the California Highway Patrol reported. Witnesses said the victims appeared to have been killed on impact.
The CHP will be the investigating agency. There was no immediate comment from the Kern Sheriff’s Department and the names of the victims were not released.
CHP Sgt. Kenny Hagerman spoke to the media shortly after 11 p.m. He said the Kern deputy had “openly struck” the two pedestrians.
He said he could not confirm bystanders’ reports that the vehicle’s emergency lights were not on. No details were offered on what kind of call the deputy had been responding to.
The deputy was taken to a hospital, Hagerman said. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
Hagerman confirmed that the two pedestrians had sustained fatal injuries. He said they had not been at a crosswalk.
Brandon Gudmundson, 16, said he and a friend were the first people on the scene.
He said he and other friends had been in a car turning left onto Norris from Oildale Drive — less than a block away from the accident — when a sheriff’s vehicle passed them at a high rate of speed.
Reaching the accident scene seconds later, they parked at the market.
Gudmundson and one friend ventured into the street and came upon an appallingly grisly scene. He said it was clear that the victims had suffered severe trauma. They appeared lifeless.
He said the deputy was still in his vehicle.
“I’m still shocked,” he said. “We were just (out) trying to find something to do. We were just making a left.”
A woman told KBFX reporter Jose Gaspar that she had “heard a loud bang, like two cars crashed.”
Looking in the direction of the sound, she saw a sheriff’s vehicle and what appeared to be two victims in the street.
She called 911.
A woman named Whittney Peaker, 22, said she had been en route to pick up her boyfriend, who she said was the male victim.
The victim had called Peaker moments before, saying his motorcycle was out of gas. He had been walking it across Norris when he was hit.
Peaker, distraught, described herself as the mother of the victim’s two small sons. They had been planning to go to a movie Friday night.
“I drove down here to pick him up,” she said, crying.
She said she believed the female crash victim was a mutual friend.
Peaker’s mother, Stephanie Lindley, also was at the scene. She said she did not witness the accident but said they had been told the sheriff’s car did not have its emergency lights on.
Hours later, a long section of Norris remained cordoned off near Diane.
A large number of sheriff’s deputies had come to the scene. A crowd of 30 to 40 people had gathered near the crash site, prevented from approaching the accident. Observers said the atmosphere was somewhat tense.
The sheriff’s vehicle displayed some front-end damage. A small debris field stretched from the vehicle to the apparent impact location about 50 yards back.
Witnesses said that the remnants of what appeared to be the motorcycle were farther down the road, ahead of the deputy’s car.
Peaker said she had been unable to obtain any information from deputies.
The CHP’s Hagerman said he expected the road to be closed until at least 2 or 3 a.m.

Off-duty deputy crashes into Fillmore Starbucks, kills ex-Marine
FILLMORE, Calif. (KABC) — An off-duty sheriff’s deputy in Fillmore apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his SUV, crashed into a Starbucks and killed an ex-Marine.
The victim, 30-year-old Sergio Mendez, was an Iraq war veteran who had enlisted in the National Guard.
The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. Authorities said Michael Cedarland, who has been with the sheriff’s department for seven years, lost control of his truck and traveled about 300 feet from the road into the building in the 600 block of Ventura Street.
The car broke through the east wall of the store, plowed through the customer lobby area and came to rest at the front door.
Mendez was pinned between the vehicle and a wall, according to investigators.
Authorities said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision. It was unclear if Cedarland will face any charges.
Vishva Bandhu was working at the pizza place next door at the time and said the crash felt like an earthquake.![]()
“When we came out we saw a guy lying down on the floor and he was stuck inside the wall and the big truck,” he said.
Bandhu said one woman tried to help Mendez but it was too late. He says the woman was holding up Mendez’s head to give him support, but the veteran was unconscious.
Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get Mendez out. He sustained multiple internal injuries and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center. He succumbed to his injuries during emergency surgery.
“What I just don’t understand is that he came back from his war to die here in Fillmore. That’s unbelievable. I’m going to miss him,” said Richard Gonzalez, a friend of Mendez.
Two other customers, Jose Iraheta of Lancaster and Thomas Michaels of Piru, were treated for minor injuries and released.
Cedarland, 30, was also taken to the hospital due to the strong impact of the crash, but he was not injured.
Authorities said Cedarland was on his way to visit a friend going westbound on Highway 126 when he fell asleep at the wheel.
The impact of the crash was so strong that officials had to red-tag the building. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Lemoore fatal crash victim identified
HANFORD – A 36-year-old man who died in a crash near Lemoore Tuesday morning has been identified as Jorge Martinez of Hanford, authorities said.
Martinez was driving a 1994 Ford Thunderbird on Grangeville Boulevard when his car collided with another vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident happened around 6:50 a.m. near the intersection of 15th Avenue and Grangeville Boulevard. Officials said a vehicle traveling eastbound on Grangeville drifted into the westbound lane and hit Martinez’s vehicle heading west on the road.
According to the CHP, the eastbound vehicle, a 2003 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling at about 50 to 55 mph, while the Thunderbird was traveling at an unknown speed.
Details on the CHP traffic incident information website indicated one of the vehicles, presumably Martinez’s, rolled into a nearby field.
The website also indicated the road was closed for nearly 70 minutes following the accident.
The driver of the Cherokee was transported to Adventist Medical Center-Hanford, where she was treated for minor injuries. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have ruled out alcohol and drugs as a factor in the accident. Both drivers were wearing a seat belt, they said.
The accident remains under investigation.
Cause of the Lemoore fatal crash
If news accounts in the Hanford Sentinel are accurate, the driver of the Jeep Cherokee is likely responsible for causing this accident. However, the accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and an official determination of the cause of the Kings County crash has not been made.

1 dead as trains pushes car a quarter mile

PLACENTIA – A man died when his vehicle was struck by a freight train Friday morning, authorities said.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters tried to free him from the wreck, said Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn.
The crash, involving a BNSF Railway freight train and a Toyota Corolla, occurred near Tustin and Orangethorpe avenues just before 8 a.m., Dunn said.
The sergeant said the freight train was headed east when it crashed into the Corolla, which was pushed for about a quarter mile along the tracks, and came to a stop east of Jefferson Street, Dunn said.
“The crash occurred in Anaheim, but the train stopped in Placentia,” Dunn said.
Firefighters and police from Anaheim, Fullerton and Placentia responded to the scene.
Metrolink, Amtrak and cargo trains travel on those tracks, Stone said, and officials have asked that all train traffic be stopped in the area. Traffic is expected to be impacted for several hours while authorities investigate the fatal accident.
Eastbound Orangethorpe is closed at Tustin Avenue and westbound Orangethorpe is closed at Van Buren Street.
Anaheim police investigators are trying to determine how the fatal accident occurred.
“We have not ruled out that he potentially crossed over the grade-crossing,” Dunn said.
Gary A Kessler has represented seriously injured victims of railroad accidents, train collisions, train derailment, train crashes and train versus automobile collisions (train derailment) as well as numerous public transportation cases. In California, we have seen the massive expansion of the Metrolink as well as commuter train travel (BART, Metrolink, Amtrak, Cable Car, etc.). Due to the increase of train travel we have also seen an increase in train crashes in the last decade. This type of commuter train travel requires the Defendant (BART, Metrolink, Amtrak) to give you (the passenger) the “highest degree of care (i.e., safety)” since the defendant is a “common carrier”. We at the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler demand accountability and compensation for any lack of care, lapse in safety and injuries or damages you have sustained by obtaining compensation for your damages and injuries.
Besides injured victims traveling in trains, we see motorists killed in train collisions. Additionally, trains carrying toxic chemicals have derailed and toxic chemicals have escaped into the atmosphere, injuring victims both on and off the train.
