Bicyclist struck by vehicle in critical condition

SANTA ANA – A 50-year-old bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on Sunday night, police said.

The traffic accident was reported in the 100 block of North Euclid Street just after 6:15 p.m., Santa Ana police Sgt. Richard Gatto said.

The bicyclist, who police have not identified, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange in critical condition, Gatto said, and was undergoing surgery late Sunday night.

The cause of the traffic accident is under investigation. It wasn’t immediately clear if the bicyclist was in the street or in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.

The driver stayed to talk to police, Gatto said, and no arrests or citations have been reported.

The northbound lanes of Euclid were temporarily closed following the collision.

Bicycle Accident Personal Injury Liability

The Santa Ana Police Department will surely look at speed and other factors to determine why this accident occurred, and whether the driver of the automobile  could have done anything to avoid the collision. While this accident remains under investigation, the family of the  bicyclist injured in this collision would be well-advised to speak with an experienced and knowledgeable bicycle accident lawyer. An attorney who understands the unique legal issues of car vs. bicycle accidents can review the  SAPD report and determine who is responsible for this collision. If the driver of the vehicle is determined to be responsible, he may be liable for the young victim’s medical care expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.

Bicycles have as much right to be on the road as other vehicles.  When automobile drivers violate the rights of a bicyclist, serious injuries and death can occur.

When you suffer serious/traumatic injuries or a loved one’s death, you are entitled to compensation (medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, future wages and pain and suffering).  The Law Offices of Gary A Kessler will aggressively represent you and fight for your rights against the insurance companies for the monetary damages you deserve.

Officials identify woman killed in Ventura crash

Officials Thursday identified a 65-year-old Ventura woman killed Wednesday after being hit by a car while walking her dog.

Katie Reed was legally crossing Ventura Avenue in a crosswalk at Shoshone Street about 6:30 a.m. when she was struck by a southbound truck, police said.

Both she and her dog were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An autopsy showed Reed died of blunt-force injuries, said Deputy Ventura County Medical Examiner Michael Tellez.

The driver, Michael Whalen, 56, of Ventura, stopped at the scene to help the victim, police said. Neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be a factor, and Whalen was not injured or arrested.

Investigators believe the driver did not see the woman crossing the street, police said. Police and the District Attorney’s Office will determine whether to seek charges against the driver, said police Sgt. Ryan Weeks.

“Vision was limited due to darkness,” Weeks said.

Cause of the Ventura Accident

If news accounts in the Ventura County Star are accurate, the driver of the automobile is likely  responsible for causing this accident. However, the accident is still under investigation by the police  and an official determination of the cause of the Ventura  County crash has not been made.
