Infant On Life Support After Car Veers onto Sidewalk

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — A 2-month-old boy is on life support after a car veered onto a sidewalk in downtown Los Angeles and hit both a mother and the baby.

The boy, Marcello Vasquez, was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead at 2:25 a.m. The mom is said to be OK.

Investigators said the baby stroller ended up pinned between one of the parking meters and the car.

The accident happened around 9:20 p.m. Thursday on Spring Street near 4th Street, shortly after an Art Walk let out.

Investigators say a man driving a new Cadillac was trying to parallel park when he mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake and ended up on the sidewalk.
The car struck a mother and a baby in a stroller. The mother suffered serious injuries, according to police.
The baby was on life support Friday at a local hospital.Spring Street was closed in both directions while LAPD Central traffic officers investigated the incident.

Investigators say alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the accident.

The baby was on life support Friday at a local hospital.

Spring Street was closed in both directions while LAPD Central traffic officers investigated the incident.

The driver, who apparently was not wearing shoes at the time, is said to be cooperating with police. He was not arrested.

Police said at this point it looks to be a horrible accident.

“It doesn’t appear to be alcohol or narcotics-related,” said Capt. Todd Chamberlain of the Los Angeles Police Department. “It just appears to be a tragic incident, a slip of a foot while trying to park a car on a busy street.”

The great majority of pedestrian injuries caused by motorists are due to the following:

  • DUI
  • Reckless driving
  • Cell phone usage
  • Ran a red light or stop sign- Failure to observe the crosswalk
  • Confusing temporary construction zones, forcing pedestrians to walk out of the crosswalks

  • Photograph the accident scene as well as all visible injuries

The boy was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta, where he was pronounced dead. Lynam declined to release the boy’s name, saying the Siskiyou County Coroner’s Office would have to do so.

Discovery Bay Mother Dies in Crash

Discovery Bay Mother Dies in Crash  – Woman hit, killed by car as son watches

Highway 156: Victim was helping stranded motorist

A woman suffered fatal injuries before her horrified 12-year-old son when she was struck by a car on Highway 156 after she stopped to try to help two people with car trouble.

The victim, Veronica Brumley, 36, of the San Francisco Bay Area was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11 a.m. accident near the Monte del Lago mobile home park.

California Highway Patrol officers had a grief counselor come to the scene to console the victim’s son, said CHP spokesman Officer Robert Lehman.

The accident closed the two-lane highway between Prunedale and Castroville until about 1 p.m.

The victim was westbound in a sport utility vehicle when she pulled onto the right shoulder to help two people with a disabled vehicle, Lehman said.

The three talked for a bit behind Brumley’s SUV. She was getting back into her vehicle when she was struck by a Toyota sedan driven by Rachel Haskell, 18, of Garden Grove.

The teenage driver, too, was “quite distraught,” Lehman said.

There was no indication drugs or alcohol played any role in the accident. Officers were still investigating what happened, Lehman said.

The victim’s son was taken to the CHP’s Salinas office, where he was joined by his stepfather, who was in the area on business, Lehman said.

The tragedy underscores safety advice the CHP has for motorists who stop on highways.

If you have to stop, Lehman said, pull off the roadway as far as possible and stay inside the vehicle with your seat belt buckled. If a vehicle has

mechanical issues, call the CHP and they will respond. “It’s just the safer thing to do,” he said. “The highway is not a good place for anyone —

including ourselves.”

Family mourns mother killed in bus stop crash

SAN DIEGO — The father of an El Cajon woman who was hit and killed at a City Heights bus stop over the weekend described his daughter Tuesday as a great mother who loved singing at her church.

Vanessa Mae Shane, 25, suffered fatal injuries Saturday night when she, her 4-year-old son Elijah and her boyfriend David Abilez were struck by an out-of-control car.

Both the boy and Abilez, 28, were seriously injured in the 8 p.m. crash at University Avenue near Euclid Avenue, and both remain hospitalized.

Mark Shane, who is an assistant pastor at Praise Center in Pacific Beach, and his wife Laura have been at their young grandson’s bedside at Rady Children’s Hospital ever since. The boy is recovering from numerous lacerations, abrasions, and an arm that was broken in three places.

“My wife hasn’t wanted to leave his side,” Shane said.

The boy has been asking about his mother but has not been told yet that she died.

Shane said they were going to tell him today, although he knew it would be difficult to find the right thing to say. “I’ll depend on God to give me the words when the time comes,” Shane said.

The grandparents expect the boy will be in the hospital for at least the rest of the week and perhaps longer. Abilez suffered serious injuries to his legs and is expected to be hospitalized for weeks, Shane said.

Vanessa Shane had spent her last day at a park in City Heights with Abilez and her son and was waiting for her bus home when the car plowed into them.

A surveillance camera from a nearby business captured the crash on video. Shane said that people who have seen it told him that Vanessa saw the car coming, looked to see that her son was out of the way and then stepped in front of her boyfriend.

“Her last act on this earth was to protect someone,” her father said.

Investigators believe that the 71-year-old driver, identified as Jean Chizer-Williams of San Diego, was experiencing severe low-blood sugar due to diabetes when she lost control of the PT Cruiser.

Shane said he has not talked to the woman and didn’t blame her if she had a medical condition. He said he might think differently if she was prone to this type of emergency and knew about it.

Shane said his family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support they have received. Friends have set up a fund to help pay for the funeral and to help with long-term care for Elijah. Donations can be made at

Shane Trust Fund, GWC (Golden West Conference), P.O. Box 99610, San Diego, CA 92169.

6-year-old Girl Playing with Ball Killed by Hit-and -Run Driver

. Kemberly Arrue LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — The search is on for the driver of a sport utility vehicle that struck and killed a 6-year-old girl in South Los Angeles. Kemberly Arrue was playing with a ball near her home in the 600 block of West 49th Place around 9:53 p.m. Tuesday when she lost the ball and ran after it into the street, LAPD Capt. Jorge Rodriguez said. Arrue was struck by a dark-colored SUV. The driver never stopped, Rodriguez said. A family member told KTLA that Arrue’s body was thrown some 80 feet down the road. Her father picked her up and carried her back to the front lawn while the girl’s mother frantically called 911. Arrue was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police are asking for the public’s help in tracking down the driver. All that is known about the SUV is that it was dark colored and likely has front-end damage.

Hit and Run Felony – When Hit and Run results in bodily injury or death, a felony will be charged. How soon after I am injured do I have to file a lawsuit?

Every state has certain time limits called “statutes of limitations,” which govern the amount of time you have to file a personal injury lawsuit. In some states, you may have as little as one year to file a lawsuit arising out of an automobile accident. If you miss the deadline for filing your case, your claims can be dismissed. Consequently, it is important to talk with a lawyer as soon as you receive or discover an injury.

What damages are recoverable in pedestrian accident cases?

The injured party may recover damages for past and future medical expenses, past and future wage loss, past and future pain and suffering. If the defendant’s conduct is extreme, punitive damages may be awarded. If the pedestrian dies, his or her survivors are entitled to recover full compensation for their economic losses that result from the pedestrian’s death, as well as damages which stem from the loss of society care and comfort of the decedent.

Do I need to retain an attorney?

It is almost always a good idea to retain an attorney in a pedestrian accident case because there usually will be some questions related to fault and comparative negligence. Expert witnesses may need to be retained to reconstruct the accident factors, and help determine responsibility for the accident. The family members of the victim would be well advised to contact California Wrongful Death Attorney Gary A.
