Coachella Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash, Driver Sought
Police sought the public’s help Tuesday in tracking down a hit and run driver responsible for killing a 50-year-old Coachella man.
The man, whose identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was walking along Harrison Street, north of Avenue 50, at around 5:42 p.m. Monday when he was struck, according to Riverside Sheriff’s Corporal Don Olson.
Police found the man lying in the middle of the road, and no car in sight. He died a short time later at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio, coroner’s reports indicated.
“During the investigation, officers learned the vehicle that struck the victim fled the scene and was last seen traveling northbound on Grapefruit Blvd from Harrison Street,” Olson said.
Witnesses described the vehicle– possibly a Toyota Camry– as a light colored, four door sedan, Olson said, adding that he suspect car will have damaged front headlights from the crash.
“The vehicle may also have moderate damage to the hood and grill,” Olson said.
If you think you’ve spotted the car wanted in connection to this crime, call Coachella police at 760-836-3215. You can also call Valley Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP.

Pedestrian killed on Highway 50 Douglas’ first fatality of 2012
Authorities have not released the name of the victim in Douglas County’s first fatal accident of 2012.
The accident occurred 12:44 a.m. New Year’s Day when a 21-year-old Walnut Creek, Calif., man walking in the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 was hit by a vehicle.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the man was struck from behind by a 2011 Ford Expedition California Highway Patrol vehicle driven by Officer Joshua J. Varanini, 38 of Truckee.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the man was walking in the left eastbound lane wearing denim jeans and a black jacket.
Varanni stepped on the breaks and steered to the right to avoid the walker, but the vehicle’s left front hit the man and forced him into the opposing westbound lanes where he was hit by a passenger shuttle.
NHP Trooper Chuck Allen said the accident forced the closure of the highway for almost four hours. Eastbound traffic was rerouted out of the area via State Route 207, Kingsbury Grade, while westbound traffic was turned around near the scene. The highway was completely reopened at approximately 4:36 am.
The name of the victim has not been released yet.
Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team will be investigating this tragedy.

Two Pedestrians Killed in Incline Village Friday Night
The Nevada Highway Patrol says two pedestrians were killed when they were hit by a vehicle in Incline Village Friday night.
Troopers tell Channel 2 News that it happened around 7:30 p.m. on State Route 28. They say it happened by the Radio Shack, near Village Boulevard.
Troopers say the two unidentified pedestrians were crossing the street when a black 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck driving south on State Route 28 hit them.
The truck was driven by 27-year old Christopher Torii Smith of Grass Valley, California who was also carrying three passengers.
Troopers say witness statements and evidence shows the pedestrians were in a painted crosswalk, or nearby one when Smith allegedly hit them.
The male victim reportedly died at the scene, while the female victim died while being taken to Renown Regional Medical Center.
Troopers say the road was closed in both directions for about four hours before opening back up again a little after 11:30 p.m. Friday.
Smith later was arrested and taken into custody Friday night. They believe drugs may have been a factor in the fatal crash.
Smith was charged with two counts of driving under the influence causing death and failure to yield to pedestrians.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have information to call Trooper Mike Stapledon at 689-4623 about case number: NHP-111230851.
Cause of the Lake Tahoe Car Accident
If news accounts from North Lake Tahoe Bonanza News reports are accurate, the pickup driver likely is responsible for causing this accident. However, the incident is still under investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Pedestrian Accidents and Wrongful Death Liability
As a pedestrian you should be able to walk in the crosswalk, feeling safe and confident. Unfortunately, in California we know all to well that car drivers do not take the time to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks, and innocent pedestrians get seriously injured and sometimes even killed.
Bicycles have as much right to be on the road as other vehicles. When automobile drivers violate the rights of a bicyclist, serious injuries and death can occur.
When you suffer serious/traumatic injuries or a loved one’s death, you are entitled to compensation (medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages, future wages and pain and suffering). The Law Offices of Gary A Kessler will aggressively represent you and fight for your rights against the insurance companies for the monetary damages you deserve.
the insurance companies for the monetary damages you deserve.
The great majority of pedestrian injuries caused by motorists are due to the following:
- DUI
- Reckless driving
- Cell phone usage
- Ran a red light or stop sign- Failure to observe the crosswalk
- Confusing temporary construction zones, forcing pedestrians to walk out of the crosswalks
If you or a loved one is involved in a serious pedestrian or bicycle accident:
- Insist that a report is filed by the Police Department, California Highway Patrol, or Sheriff’s Department
- Obtain essential information (i.e. name, address, insurance information, vehicle license number and driver license number of any and all persons involved in the accident)
- Photograph the accident scene as well as all visible injuries
- Shut up! Talk to no one about the accident or your injuries other than your attorney or doctor, never to an insurance adjuster or insurance investigator. Do not volunteer a statement to any insurance company.
- Sign absolutely nothing without consulting a lawyer
- Seek medical attention immediately and keep a diary of your level of pain
- – Keep all receipts for all medical expenses and/or funeral bills and wage loss records
- – Contact the Law Offices of Gary A Kessler or another experienced law firm immediately to protect your rights and preserve the evidence!

Woman Struck and Killed by Trash Truck
A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday afternoon by a trash truck in a residential area of Westminster, an Orange County Fire Authority official said.
Authorities responded to a call about 1:15 p.m. at 9021 Madison Ave., where witnesses say a woman who appeared to be in her 40s was hit.
Capt. Marc Stone said the woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“She wasn’t in crosswalk or anything like that,” Stone said. “How the two came together, I have no idea.”
Witnesses have told police that the woman, identified as Betty Dietz, 65, was trying to flag down the garbage man when she stepped into the street and was accidentally run over, authorities said Thursday evening.
Dietz was standing near her house in a cul-de-sac in the 9000 block of Madison Avenue because she may have forgotten to put out her trash can. She stepped into the street to try to alert the driver, but the driver did not see her and exited his truck only after he heard the sound of her body being crushed, according to witnesses.
“At this point it looks like it was just a horrible accident,” Westminster Police Det. Alan Aoki said. “At this point we see nothing criminal.”

Pedestrian hit by one car, then dragged by a second
GARDEN GROVE — A 54-year-old man was seriously injured Wednesday night when he was struck by two cars, one of which fled while the other dragged him more than 700 feet, police said.
A Dodge Magnum traveling south on West Street near Acacia Avenue is believed to have struck Gregory Martin of Garden Grove, who was then hit by an SUV traveling in the same direction, said Jason Perkins, a collision investigator with the Garden Grove Police Department.
Martin was trapped underneath the SUV and was dragged along southbound West Street and onto Garden Grove Boulevard until the driver stopped the vehicle, Perkins said.
Police and paramedics arrived about 6:40 p.m., taking Martin to a hospital, where he was reportedly in critical condition.
While the driver of the SUV remained at the scene to talk to police, the driver of the Magnum fled before officers arrived, Perkins said.
A witness gave investigators a license plate number for the Magnum, which they reported finding abandoned in Santa Ana several hours after the accident.
“There was obvious and indicative damage to it,” Perkins said.
Police were searching for the driver of the Magnum.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the pedestrian or the vehicles had right of way.
While there are unmarked crosswalks in the area, police do not know if Martin was walking in one of them.
Cause of the Garden Grove accident
The cause of the December 28 pedestrian accident remains under investigation by the Garden Grove Police Department.

Officials identify woman killed in Ventura crash
Officials Thursday identified a 65-year-old Ventura woman killed Wednesday after being hit by a car while walking her dog.
Katie Reed was legally crossing Ventura Avenue in a crosswalk at Shoshone Street about 6:30 a.m. when she was struck by a southbound truck, police said.
Both she and her dog were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. An autopsy showed Reed died of blunt-force injuries, said Deputy Ventura County Medical Examiner Michael Tellez.
The driver, Michael Whalen, 56, of Ventura, stopped at the scene to help the victim, police said. Neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be a factor, and Whalen was not injured or arrested.
Investigators believe the driver did not see the woman crossing the street, police said. Police and the District Attorney’s Office will determine whether to seek charges against the driver, said police Sgt. Ryan Weeks.
“Vision was limited due to darkness,” Weeks said.
Cause of the Ventura Accident
If news accounts in the Ventura County Star are accurate, the driver of the automobile is likely responsible for causing this accident. However, the accident is still under investigation by the police and an official determination of the cause of the Ventura County crash has not been made.
