California man dead after being hit crossing street in Laughlin
Metro Police said “pedestrian error” caused an accident Saturday night in Laughlin that claimed the life of a 62-year-old California man.
Police said the accident happened at 8:48 p.m. on Casino Drive south of Bruce Woodbury Drive when the victim and his wife attempted to cross the street outside of a marked crosswalk.
Reports say a Colorado man driving a 1997 Ford F250 was driving south on Casino Drive in the right travel lane when the man entered the traffic lane. The couple, from Huntington Beach, Calif., were trying to cross Casino Drive from the east curb to the west curb, police said.
Authorities pronounced the man dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured, police said.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim pending notification of his family.
The accident marked the 41st traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.

Pedestrian killed on Avenue 152 near Porterville
One person died Saturday after being hit by a vehicle west of Porterville, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim was walking near the roadway on Avenue 152 near Road 184 about 9:45 p.m. when they were hit by a vehicle, Sgt. Chris Boudreaux said. The victim sustained fatal injuries and died on the scene. Callers to 911 originally reported that they believed the body may have been an animal.
The accident was thought to have been a hit-and-run at first, but the driver of the vehicle had children in the car and told officers he did not want them to see what had happened, Boudreaux said.
The driver dropped his children off at his home nearby and returned to the scene of the accident.

Man in wheelchair killed by car in Fresno
Police are investigating an incident in which a man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a car Tuesday night in southeast Fresno.
The Fresno County coroner identified the man as Moses Lara, 60. The fatal incident happened about 10:30 p.m. near Clovis Avenue and Kings Canyon Road.

Pedestrian hit, killed by pickup in Mountain View
A man was struck and killed Monday night by a pickup truck in Mountain View, police said.
The crash happened near the corner of North Shoreline Boulevard and Wright Avenue shortly before 9 p.m., said police spokeswoman Liz Wylie.
The man driving the pickup was headed north on North Shoreline when he hit the pedestrian, Wylie said. The victim, who died at the scene, did not have identification on him.
The driver stopped after the crash and cooperated with police, Wylie said. The man, whose name was not released, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.
The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.
Police are looking for a woman who performed CPR on the victim and left without giving officers her name or a statement about what she may have seen, Wylie said.

Highway worker reported to be son of racer Bruce Penhall killed
A Caltrans contract worker reported to be the son of motorcycle racer Bruce Penhall was killed late Wednesday when he was struck by a drunk driver on a freeway in Baldwin Park, police said.
Connor McDermott Penhall, 21, of Corona was part of a contract crew working for Caltrans on the westbound 10 Freeway at about 11:45 p.m. when he was struck by a Toyota Rav4 that drove through the construction barricades, California Highway Patrol Officer Kerri Rivas said.
KTLA-TV reports that Penhall was the son of Bruce Penhall, the former motorcycle racing champion and TV and film star.
Westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway were closed through the night but reopened at about 6:15 a.m., Rivas said.
Bruce Penhall retired from racing after he won his second world championship in 1982 in front of his home crowd at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
Cause of the Baldwin Park Crash
Investigators believe the driver, Tatsuhiko Sakamoto, 37, of Arcadia, was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter, DUI and driving without a license.

COLTON: Tow-truck operator struck, killed on I-10
A SigAlert issued at 5:25 on March 30th after a major-injury collision on westbound Interstate 10 in Colton slowed traffic to a crawl has been cancelled.
Highway Patrol dispatchers said that a pedestrian, who was helping a stranded vehicle just east of Rancho Avenue, was hit by another vehicle.
Jesus Salcedo, a 56 year old resident of Colton, and owner/operator of J&S Towing, was in the processing of towing a disabled vehicle from the shoulder of the westbound Interstate 10 Freeway, at the La Cadena Dr. on ramp, in the city of Colton, when he was struck and killed by a westbound Nissan Titan SUV.
At one point, traffic was backed up eastward well passed the interchange with Interstate 215.
The entire westbound freeway was closed for a time, but emergency crews got the two right lanes reopened quickly, while the Nos. 3 and 4 lanes remained closed, dispatchers said. Traffic inched its way around the collision site.
Some traffic was taken off the freeway at Ninth Street in Colton, the CHP said. The SigAlert was cancelled at 8:07 p.m.

Man hit by Muni bus dies
San Francisco — A man was hit by a Muni bus and later died Sunday morning, after witnesses saw him walk into the street from between two parked cars, San Francisco police said.
The man, who has not been identified, was struck by a 21 Hayes bus near Fillmore Street at about 10:45 a.m., police said. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m.
The accident is under investigation. The bus driver has been placed on non-driving status pending the results of the investigation, said Muni spokesman Paul Rose.

Toddler killed after pickup truck strikes family sitting on bus bench in El Monte
EL MONTE – An 18-month-old girl died and her grandmother and 12-year-old uncle were injured Saturday after they were struck by a car while sitting at a bus stop, authorities said.
The toddler’s name was not released Sunday pending confirmation that her family had been notified, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said.
The crash took place just after 2 p.m. as a 36-year-old El Monte woman was sitting with her 18-month-old granddaughter and 12-year-old son on a bus stop bench at Valley Boulevard and Mountain View Road, El Monte police Lt. Richard Cano said.
A 59-year-old El Monte man tried to park his 1999 GMC pickup truck in the parking lot of a nearby Walgreens, officials said.
“For an unknown reason, the vehicle accelerated, jumped the curb and struck a bus bench occupied by the victims, coming to a rest against an Edison pole and guide wire,” according to Motor Officer Ryan Abbott.
The toddler died from her injures at an area hospital, police said. Her her grandmother remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday, and the woman’s 12-year-old son was listed in stable condition.
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Cano said, and no crime was initially suspected.

Pedestrian killed by sheriff’s car
Annamaria Victoria Loza is dead after a fatal crash involving a San Bernardino County Sheriff patrol unit on Twentynine Palms Highway
Officials say that the cruiser was travelling westbound just past Valley View St on Tuesday, March 19 when it struck Loza as she was running across the road.
Loza was pronounced dead on scene and an autopsy will be performed to figure out the exact cause of death.
CHP continues to investigate the accident.

No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
(c) The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.
(d) Subdivision (b) does not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”

Sanger woman killed in crash near Minkler
A 65-year-old Sanger woman was killed on Saturday evening when she was struck by a truck on Kings Canyon Road near Minkler.
Robyn Cooper, 65, of Sanger died in the accident on Kings Canyon Road near Frankwood Avenue, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said today. Cooper was crossing Kings Canyon with friends toward a restaurant on the south side of Frankwood shortly before 8 p.m. when the accident happened
