REGION: Fatalities identified in Victorville wreck
San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department officials have identified two victims of a Sunday morning high-speed crash in Victorville.
Quan Campbell, 29, of Victorville, was driving northbound on El Evado Road at high rate speed and failed to negotiate a curve in the road just south of Mojave Road, which led to the vehicle rolling several times, the release stated.
Campbell and Amber Thompson, 21, of Pomona, died at the scene of the accident reported at 6:39 a.m., the release stated.
Another passenger, who was not identified by name, was taken by helicopter to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton and treated for his injuries.
The Sheriff’s Department’s major accident investigation team is investigating the accident.

Based on the limited facts provided by the Press Enterprise, it is impossible to know exactly what happened here and why this fatal crash happened. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department will surely look at the speed of the vehicle, witness reports, and other factors to determine what occurred and who was responsible. roll over collisions such as this one can have countless causes, including unsafe passing maneuvers, swerving to avoid an object in the road, falling asleep at the wheel, driving under the influence, or driver distraction.

Arvin Woman Killed, Man Hurt In Possible DUI Crash
An Arvin woman is dead and her driver hurt after being hit by a possible drunken driver at Edison Highway & DiGiorgio Road.
The crash happened about 3:30 p.m. near Lamont when California Highway Patrol officials said a Bakersfield man in a red truck ran a stop sign, crashing into the side of a white truck driven by the Arvin residents.
The 47-year-old Arvin female passenger died, and the 58-year-old male driver was taken to the hospital with major injuries.
CHP officials are now investigating if the Bakersfield driver at fault was driving under the influence.
The crash was initially reported as an attempted hit and run, but officers said the driver stayed on the scene and was “shaken up.”
Cause of the Kern Car Accident
If news accounts of KERO News are accurate, the man driving the red truck is likely responsible for causing this accident, because he was allegedly driving under the influence and a high rate of speed. However, the incident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and an official determination of the cause of the Kern County crash has not been made.

Coroner’s officials have released the name of the 69-year-old Hemet woman killed during Monday’s head-on collision in Winchester that triggered the DUI arrest of the surviving driver.
Ella Anne Jefferson died at the scene of the 11:16 a.m. wreck along the eastbound lanes of Domenigoni Parkway, about three-quarters of a mile west of Leon Road.
Arrested at a hospital for investigation of driving while under the influence was 20-year-old Ryan Mahan of Menifee, said California Highway Patrol Officer Darren Meyer.
“Drugs and alcohol were considered to be a significant part of the collision,” Meyer said this morning.

Deadly collision injures three Marines
MORONGO VALLEY – A head-on vehicle collision on Twentynine Palms Highway Thursday afternoon killed one man and sent three Marines to Desert Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The collision occurred at 12:14 p.m. on the highway near Lanning Lane in Morongo Valley, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Morongo Basin station.
A CHP report states Andrew Dufresne, 21, a Marine stationed in Twentynine Palms, was driving a 2004 Saab sedan westbound on the highway. His car crossed the center two-way left-turn lane, striking a 1979 Chevrolet station wagon headed eastbound. The head-on collision killed the driver of the Chevrolet, whose name has not been released yet.
The report states alcohol does not appear to have contributed to the crash, but CHP Officer Eric Brewer confirmed on-scene that the two passengers in Dufresne’s car admitted they had been drinking.
Dufresne was trapped in his vehicle before emergency crews cut the top off the sedan and extricated him from the driver seat. He was then flown to Desert Regional Medical Center. Two passengers in the Saab were taken to Desert Regional by Morongo Basin Ambulance.

Lowell Marine killed in car crash near Calif. base
Considered a rising star in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Lowell High School, Dominic Nop spent the past four years preparing to be a Marine. When he graduated in June, he fulfilled his goal, attending basic training at Parris Island, S.C.
Nop’s dreams were cut short early Friday morning when he was killed in a car crash near a Marine base in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Nop, 18, was a passenger in the rear seat of a car when it crashed just before 2:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. According to the coroner’s statement, the car drifted off the road, crossed another lane of traffic, and struck a utility pole.
The car was driven by Herbert Jimenez, 22, of Twentynine Palms, according to San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller. Jimenez and two other unidentified passengers were transported to a local hospital and treated for light to moderate injuries.
Authorities said drinking may have played a part in the crash. “It looks like alcohol has been determined to be a factor,’’ Miller said yesterday.
Miller said no charges have been brought yet against Jiminez, but the department was in the process of forwarding a final accident report to the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office. Miller said officials were investigating whether speed was also a factor. She said she did not know if the passengers or driver of the car were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
As word spread across Lowell yesterday, people expressed shock and sadness.
“It’s terrible news,’’ Lowell Mayor James L. Milinazzo said. “He was serving his country and to be taken like that is just a terrible tragedy. We will be lowering the flag at City Hall on Monday.’’
Lowell High School’s principal, Edward Rozmiarek, called Nop a gifted student, and said grief counselors will be available tomorrow morning for students.
“We’ll also be having a moment of silence,’’ said Rozmiarek.
Nop’s family could not be reached for comment, but within the close-knit ranks of Lowell’s JROTC program, word of Nop’s death spread quickly Friday as friends texted one another and shared tributes to Nop on Facebook.
“Dominic was a role model for everybody. A lot of kids looked up to him and wanted to go into the Marines because of him,’’ said Kayla Montanez, who served with Nop in JROTC and said she spoke with him earlier this week. “He never had anything bad to say. Everything that came out of his mouth was positive.’’
Kevin Casilli, a retired Air Force master sergeant who helps oversee the Lowell JROTC program, called Nop a model student and citizen.
“He did hundreds of hours of community service and never complained,’’ Casilli said, noting that Nop would be the first to volunteer to serve in honor guard events at city parades, funerals, graduations, and inaugurations.
“He was just an extremely dedicated, selfless person who always thought of others before himself,’’ said Casilli, who last saw Nop when the young Marine returned to speak to students last month at Lowell High School. “This is such a shock.’’
Cause of the San Bernardino County Crash
Based on the information provided by news reports, it appears the driver may likely be at fault for the collision due to traveling at “a high rate of speed.” However, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will determine other possible factors that could have contributed to the crash such as distracted driving, negligent or reckless actions by the driver, and road conditions.

Michelle Reni Cafagna was airlifted from the crash site to a hospital in La Jolla but could not be revived, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Voter registration records indicate Cafagna resided in San Marcos.
The passenger in the car, Rizelle Cabana Alamares, 24, died instantly in the mid-day crash.
Oceanside police said the driver lost control of the sedan on El Camino Real near Via Las Rosas, veered onto the center divider and slammed into the tree on the passenger side.

Lemoore fatal crash victim identified
HANFORD – A 36-year-old man who died in a crash near Lemoore Tuesday morning has been identified as Jorge Martinez of Hanford, authorities said.
Martinez was driving a 1994 Ford Thunderbird on Grangeville Boulevard when his car collided with another vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident happened around 6:50 a.m. near the intersection of 15th Avenue and Grangeville Boulevard. Officials said a vehicle traveling eastbound on Grangeville drifted into the westbound lane and hit Martinez’s vehicle heading west on the road.
According to the CHP, the eastbound vehicle, a 2003 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling at about 50 to 55 mph, while the Thunderbird was traveling at an unknown speed.
Details on the CHP traffic incident information website indicated one of the vehicles, presumably Martinez’s, rolled into a nearby field.
The website also indicated the road was closed for nearly 70 minutes following the accident.
The driver of the Cherokee was transported to Adventist Medical Center-Hanford, where she was treated for minor injuries. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have ruled out alcohol and drugs as a factor in the accident. Both drivers were wearing a seat belt, they said.
The accident remains under investigation.
Cause of the Lemoore fatal crash
If news accounts in the Hanford Sentinel are accurate, the driver of the Jeep Cherokee is likely responsible for causing this accident. However, the accident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol and an official determination of the cause of the Kings County crash has not been made.

UPDATE: Girls killed in Fontana crash were sisters
Two girls who were among four people killed early Sunday in a single-car collision in Fontana were sisters, Fontana police confirmed this afternoon.
Raquel Garcia, 18, and Rebecca Garcia, 16, both of Fontana, died in the fiery crash that happened just after 1 a.m. on Foothill Boulevard at Lime Avenue, Fontana police Sgt. Billy Green said today by telephone.
Also killed in the crash were Javier T. Contreras, 18, who was driving, and Pedro Rivera, 18. All the 18-year-olds graduated by Fontana’s A.B. Miller High School in June, Green said. Rebecca was a student at Miller.
Contreras was at the wheel of a Chrysler Sebring that witnesses said was traveling in excess of the posted 45 mph speed limit, Green said. Investigators have yet to determine exactly how fast the car was going.
The car slammed into a concrete support for a railroad trestle that passes above the roadway, bursting into flames, he said.
Contreras and Rebecca Garcia died at the scene, the San Bernardino County coroner’s office said. Rivera died in the emergency room at Kaiser Permante Fontana Medical Center and Raquel Garcia was pronounced dead in the ER at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.
Green said final results of the investigation into the crash will not be available for at least a month and perhaps two.
The condition of the bodies was such that toxicology tests will be difficult, he said. The usual blood tests might not be possible, so tissue samples will have to be tested “and there’s only one lab in San Diego that does that.”
Green said the family has requested privacy and is not talking to the media.

1 killed, 2 hurt in head-on collision on Highway 126

SANTA PAULA, Calif. (KABC) — Highway 126 was shut down east of Santa Paula in Ventura County on Sunday following a fatal head-on collision.
A 15-year-old Bakersfield girl very tragically died Sunday night in a head-on collision on Highway 126 between Santa Paula and Fillmore, the Ventura County Star reported today. The victim, identified by the Ventura County Medical Examiner as Maria Puentes, 15, was a passenger in a vehicle driven eastbound on Highway 126, near Toland Road. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle Puentes was riding in drifted into westbound traffic, directly into the path of an oncoming truck.
The impact of the head-on collision caused the vehicle to spin out of control into westbound traffic and the truck to spin into eastbound lanes. The 17-year-old boy driving the vehicle and the driver of the truck, a 53-year-old Bakersfield man, were taken to Ventura County Medical Center. Puentes died at the scene of the head-on collision, which occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011.
Cause of the Fatal Crash
As a passenger, Puentes likely could have done nothing to prevent this fatal head-on collision that ultimately took her life. Based on the limited facts provided by the Ventura County Star, it is impossible to know exactly what happened here and why this fatal crash happened. The CHP will surely look at the speed of both vehicles, witness reports, and other factors to determine what occurred and who was responsible. Head-on collisions such as this one can have countless causes, including unsafe passing maneuvers, swerving to avoid an object in the road, falling asleep at the wheel, driving under the influence, or driver distraction.
